After reading about Civil War soldiers' diet and rations, Hunter brought in some hard tack for us to try. He made it according to a recipe that we read in class: a mix of flour, water, salt and a little shortening that's baked long enough to make it dry and hard. One student noted that it didn't have the bugs and worms that some Civil War soldiers found in theirs, but we tasted it anyway. By the looks on students' faces, this was certainly not a gourmet treat! In fact, few students took more than one bite.
Thanks, Hunter! We now have a much better understanding of soldiers' food in the 1860's.
